  • Biography

Abubakar worked in the Nigerian Customs Service for twenty years, becoming Deputy Director, since the second highest position in the service was known. He retired in April 1989 and devoted himself to business and politics on a full-time basis. He ran for the governorship in the state of Gongola (now the states of Adamawa and Taraba) in 1991, and for the presidency in 1993, the third rank after MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe in the Social Party primaries Democrat (SDP).

In 1998, he was elected governor of Adamawa State. While still elected governor, he was selected as the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as Olusegun Obasanjo’s running mate. The duo won the elections in February 1999 and Abubakar took office as second democratically elected vice-president of Nigeria on May 29, 1999.

Abubakar’s second term as Vice President was marked by a heated relationship with President Obasanjo. His attempt to succeed Obasanjo was not supported by the latter, and a trial at the Supreme Court was required to allow Abubakar run for the presidency as he was initially disqualified by the Independent National Electoral Commission on the grounds that he had been charged with financial misconduct by an investigative panel created at Obasanjo’s request. The Supreme Court ordered the electoral commission to reinstate the name of Abubakar in the presidential list. Abubakar ran on the Platform of Action Congress, having resigned from the PDP because of his problems with President Obasanjo. Atiku lost the election, ranking third after Umaru Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

Atiku is the co-founder of Intels, an oil services company with numerous operations in Nigeria and abroad. He is also the founder of Adama Beverages Limited and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), both based in Yola.

  • Business

Atiku started in the real estate sector during his first days as a customs officer. In 1974, he applied for and obtained a loan of 31,000 Naira to build his first house in Yola, which he rented out. From the proceeds of the annuity, he bought another parcel and built a second house. He continued as well, building a substantial portfolio of properties in Yola.

In 1981, he moved to agriculture, acquiring 2,500 hectares of land near Yola to create a corn and cotton farm. The business went through tough times and shut down in 1986. “My first foray into farming in the 1980s ended in failure,” he wrote in a blog April 2014.
Then he ventured to trade, buy and sell trucks loaded with rice, flour, and sugar.
His most critical commercial move was when he was a customs officer in Apapa ports. Gabrielle Volpi, an Italian businessman in Nigeria had invited him to establish Nigeria Container Services (NICOTES), a logistics company operating in the ports. NICOTES would continue to provide immense wealth to Atiku. The conflict of interest charges trailed his involvement in the affairs while he was a public servant, who exercised supervisory authority.

Atiku defended his decision, claiming that his participation was limited to share ownership (which the rules of the government allowed) and that it was not involved in the day-to-day running of the company. Subsequently, NICOTES was renamed to INTELS and it was at the forefront of money laundering allegations leveled against Atiku by the US government during his vice-presidency.
The Atiku business empire also includes a beverage factory in Yola, as well as an animal feed factory.

  • Politics

Atiku’s first foray into politics was in the early 1980s, when he worked between racks in the countryside at the governorship of Bamanga Tukur, who was at the time managing director of the Nigeria Port Authority. He asked for votes on behalf of Tukur and also donated to the campaign. Towards the end of his customs career, he met Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who was second in command of the military government who led Nigeria between 1976 and 1979. Atiku was attracted by Yar’Adua to political meetings held regularly at Yar’Adua’s house in Lagos. In 1989, Atiku was elected national vice president of the Peoples Front of Nigeria, the political association led by Yar’Adua, to participate in the transition program initiated by the head of state Ibrahim Babangida.
Atiku won a seat to represent his electorate at the 1989 Constituent Assembly, created to decide a new constitution for Nigeria. Finally, the government refused to register the Popular Front (none of the groups that applied was registered) and found a place in the Social Democratic Party, one of the two parties decreed by the regime.
