Conner grew up in Morton Grove, Illinois. He first became involved in gymnastics at school and his local YMCA and was later on the gymnastics team at Niles West High School, where he graduated in 1976.

He worked with coach Paul Ziert on the gymnastics team when he attended the University of Oklahoma to work with coach Paul Ziert on the gymnastics team and he eventually graduated from OU in 1984, where he was an All-American and won the 1981 Nissen Award as America’s best gymnast



When he was 14 years old and 17 years, he won United State Junior National Championships in 1972 and the United State Gymnastics Federation All-Around championship respectively and was the youngest member of the Olympic team during the 1976 Summer Olympics. He also won a team all-around gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games.

He did not participate due to the boycott despite being qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics. Four years later, in the 1984 Summer Olympics, he won two gold medals for the team all-around and for the men’s parallel bars. His win on the parallel bars helped the United State to win its first men’s Olympic gymnastics gold medal in 80 years. He also demonstrated an original move called the “Conner spin” during the 1984 Olympics. He is also the vice-chair of the Special Olympics International Board of Directors.


At every level and stages of the national and international competition, Conner has won a different medal as a highly decorated gymnast. Some of his honors include induction into the USOC Olympic Hall of Fame (1991), the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame (1996), Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (1997). Connor was one of the 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal many years later, however, did not compete in the 1980 games.


On November 27, 1989, Nadia Comăneci, a Romanian gymnast Conner had met at the 1976 Montreal games, defected from Romania with a group of other Romanians. It was written in a newspaper which corner read that he scheduled an interview on the Pat Sajak Show in January 1990 after which he contacted the producer and arranged to make a guest appearance on the show.

Later in 1990, Conner interviewed her for ABC. Corner was later invited some months after they met to her 29-birthday party after which they developed a long-distance friendship for a few years. Conner invited Comăneci to come to Oklahoma to help him run a gymnastics school when his mutual friend died in an accident in 1991 which was later successful. Both of them were together for four years before they finally became engaged. Conner and Comăneci were married in a ceremony in Bucharest that was televised live throughout Romania on April 27, 1996, with a lot of celebration and some of the notable elites that graced the event. Their wedding reception was held in the former presidential palace.

Comăneci was interviewed some years later where she recalled that her wedding ceremony experience was very emotional, not just seeing her mother but seeing an entire country she had left. When she got married to Conner, in Bucharest there were 10,000 people on the street. People didn’t go to work that day and felt emotional when people cared about them to honor them. On June 3, 2006, the couple gave birth to a child named Dylan Paul Conner which is their only son in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Conner now owns and operates his Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy with his wife, Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian gold medalist.
