Iyanya Onoyom popularly known as Iyanya is an Afro-pop and R&B singer, this singer that was noticed when he won Project Fame 2008 is currently one of the richest Musician in Nigeria today.  Born Iyanya Onoyom on the 31st of October 1986, he was born in Palm Street, Calabar, Cross River state to a disciplinarian mother and a gentle father. Iyanya’s father was a forester while his mother was a headmistress, he lost both of them in 2008; his father at the age of 50 and his mother at the age of 42, he also lost his elder brother around that time.

  • Background and Early life

He completed his primary, secondary tertiary education in Calabar and being the grandson of a clergyman, Iyanya attended church very early in life; he also sang in his grandfather’s church as a choir from childhood. He happened to be the choirmaster of the children choir at the tender age of 5; this means he must have joined the church since he was a toddler. With this, we can safely conclude that music in his blood waiting for the right time to manifest, Iyanya never studied music like some of his counterparts, it was a passion and hobby for him. He attended the University of Calabar where he graduated and bagged a degree in Business Management.

Music Career

Iyanya is a popular Nigerian singer, recording artist and songwriter today; many people are so familiar with his success in the industry that they don’t know how he started. Yes, Iyanya started small too, he struggled and pushed through with determination and today the world is celebrating his success. Some people never even heard the name Iyanya until he won the first edition of MTN Project Fame but that was not where he started from.

After obtaining his degree from the University of Calabar, Iyanya returned to his first love which is music, but this time around he didn’t do it in the church. He managed a local bar at a hotel and he used the opportunity to sing Karaoke. Iyanya was simply doing his thing and loving it, he was also fine-tuning his vocal skills and developing his vocal abilities at the same time. He later extended the show to other bars like Mirage Nite Club, Fiesta Fries Bar and West Life in Calabar. His love for music kept him going and he said R.Kelly, Craig David, and other American Hip-hop artists influenced his music. After watching the lifestyle of Nigeria Music Industries celebrities like Olu Maintain and 2 face Idibia, he was motivated to do music on a professional level. Iyanya has started singing before going for project fame; he adopted the nickname “Lofty” and went launched out as a rapper.

When Project Fame started in 2008 and they started scouting candidates with musical abilities to participate, Iyanya’s friends KC Presh and KCee convinced him to try his luck. He gave it a trial and presented the best to the world, with this, Iyanya beat other contestants hands down in the competition and emerged as the winner of the first season of Project fame in Africa. Despite the fact that there were other ambitious and aspiring singer on the show just like him, he still gave his best and emerged as the best, it marked the beginning of his success.

After he won Project Fame Africa, Iyanya went ahead to record and launch his debut album which he titled “My Story” in 2011 but the album turned out to be a failure commercially because he had problems with promotion and distribution. However, it was a show of creativity and versatility, Iyanya showed his talent as an R&B artist with songs like “Love Truly” and a track he titled after himself “Iyanya”, the album was released by CN Media Imprint. Not one to accept defeat, Iyanya also tried doing few gospel songs but he wasn’t gaining the type of attention he wanted so he switched to something big that made him hit real gold.

He made a little research by visiting his hometown in Calabar and discovered that people have affection for Etighi dance, the dance was originally from Calabar and has started to gain ground there but it is yet to be exposed to other parts of Nigeria. Iyanya made a decision release a song to popularize the dance and teamed up a producer known as DTunes. They teamed up and released a single which they titled “Kukere”, the song was highly publicized and the single was able to bring Iyanya the fame he wanted.  The song was a success globally and it was very popular in Ghana, United Kingdom and all over Nigeria.

After “Kukere” Iyanya released another single titled “Ur Waist” which featured additional vocals. His second studio album which contains the hit songs also contains other singles like “Sexy Mama”, “Jombolo”, and “Flavour” aside from “Kukere” and “Ur Waist”. The songs won him the Artist of the Year Award at The Headies in 2013. Also in 2015, Iyanya released another album titled “Applaudise” after his massive success with his second album. He currently has a total of 3 albums, 5 promotional singles, 14 music videos and 22 singles.

He was the co-owner of a record label called Made Men Music Group, his manager Ubi Franklin was also part of the group and artists like Baci, Tekno, and Selebobo. Iyanya left Made Men Music Group in 2016 for Marvins Record owned by Don Jazzy. Although he has announced his intention to leave the Group since July 2016, people were surprised when he left in October 2016 after signing a deal with the Group.

After releasing his song Kukere which went viral and made him a household name, Iyanya became an ambassador for a mobile company in Lagos, Nigeria known as Solo Phones on the 16th of October 2013. The one year deal he reportedly signed was worth about $220,000 (35 million in Naira), he was also given a Toyota Prado 2014 model after signing the deal.

Still, in 2013, Iyanya also went ahead to clinch a deal with a popular Nigerian indigenously branded computer known as Zinos Computers, the deal was also estimated to worth  $300,000 (164 million in Naira), he also went ahead to close another deal worth #60 million naira with MTN.
