João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço was born on March 5, 1954, in Lobito, Angola. He was raised alongside nine other children by his father (Sequeira João Lourenço who lived between 1923 and 1999) and his mother (Josefa Gonçalves Cipriano Lourenço who lived between 1928 and 1998). His father spent about three years of his life in prison, over the allegation that he was a participant in an illegal political activity. His father was a nurse in one the country’s health centres, while his mother worked full-time as a seamstress.

Joao Lourenco got his primary education and secondary education in Angolo, before proceeding to study at Angola’s Industrial Institute of Luanda. As a young man in 1974, he joined a group called “The People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola” which is also known as MPLA. MPLA is one of the three primary liberation groups that helped the country gain independence. Lourenco during the liberation service invested a lot of effort in his military career.

After the country gained her independence, Lourenco remained in the military and pursued it as his career. Up till 1975, he was still an MPLA soldier and ended up participating in the Angolan Civil War. At some point in his life, Lourenco saw the need to further his military training, so he went ahead to attend Lenin Higher Academy located in the Soviet Union. He completed his learning programme and returned to Angola in 1982. Only two years after his return, Lourenco was made a governor, the governor of Moxico/Moshiko province of Angola.

That is not all, he was also the MPLA’s Secretary for Information from 1992 to 1997 and the President of the MPLA Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly from 1993 to 1998.
