Joseph Mayanja better known by his stage names, Jose Chameleone, Joe Chameleone or just chameleon is one of the most popular musicians from East Africa. Chameleon is a reggae musician and makes most of his songs in English, Swahili, and Luganda.   • His Early Life

Jose Chameleon was born in 1979 into the family of Mayanja. He has 3 other siblings, all of which are into one music style or the other. Jose is the most successful member of the family in terms of music fame and wealth. Jose passion for music was known very early on and while he was yet in school, he was allowed to pursue his passion freely at a club playing as a DJ.

Jose Chameleone started out early in school like every other Uganda citizens. Although he started his musical career quite earlier than most since he began while yet in secondary school. Jose chameleon is currently married to Daniella Atim and the couple has four children. Jose’s musical career really began in 1996 as a Disk Jockey (DJ) at a Missouri night club in Kampala where he was living. He was later signed to the Kenyan record label Ogopa DJs along with the popular Bebe Cool. While signed with the music label, Jose chameleon enjoyed his first breakthrough with his legendary album “Bageya” (he featured the popular Kenya singer Redsan in the single) which became a hit immediately after its release.  

Chameleone is one of the very first artists to have successfully created a new music style from the combination of the popular Ugandan folk music, central African rumba, zouk, and reggae. Jose chameleon is a fast songwriter and singer and by 2014 he already has more than 10 albums all of which are hits. Jose continues to rise as the best artist in Uganda and in 2014, he broke the record of the single largest gathering ever in a musical concert by any East African artist. His live concert “Tubonge Live” which was held in at the Lugogo Cricket Oval Stadium in Kampala, drew a crowd of over 40,000 fans and was regarded as the largest gathering of the audience to a music performer ever in the country. Jose chameleon was proposed to be made an ambassador of the Busoga Tourism Initiative by the speaker of the parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, after his “Tubonge Live” concert fame.  

Jose is currently the president of the popular Ugandan music label, the Leone Island. The Leone Island music label has some of the best artists like Moses Radio, Weasel, AK 47, King Saha, Papa Cidy, and Pallaso in its portfolio.
