He held this post for a duration of about 20 years, from December 29, 1992, to January 17, 2013. He served as the Minister for Energy for about one and a half years, between June 11, 2001, and December 30, 2002. Shortly after leaving his post as the Minister for Energy, under Daniel Arap Moi, Raila Odinga was appointed as the Minister of Roads, Public Works and Housing by the then President, Mwai Kibaki. He lasted in this post for about two years, between January 14, 2003, and November 21, 2005. In 2008, Raila Odinga stepped up as the second, as well as the last Prime Minister of Kenya. He was in power, as the Prime Minister of Kenya for 5 years, from April 2008 to April 2013.

Raila Odinga has contested for Kenya’s presidency on four different occasions, and this is expected to rise up to five occasions in a matter of months. His first aspiration for the presidential post was in 1997, running against Daniel Arap Moi. Odigo failed woefully in the 1997 presidential election and refused to contest in the next 2002 election. In 2007, Odinga re-appeared, proclaiming his interest to run for the presidency. In the 2007 election, his major opponent was Mwai Kibaki who happened to be the then president. Furthermore, his opponent (Mwai Kibaki) was having the support of Uhuru Kenyatta who in turn had great political influence. In the end, Odinga lost the 2007 presidential election.

However, Odinga refused to accept defeat, he stated that the election was not a credible one. He also refused to take the issue to a court, stating that the judiciary is under the manipulative power of Mwai Kibaki’s government. His refusal to admit defeat lead to a serious problem in the country. The turmoil which lasted between 2007 and 2008 is considered the most serious political crisis Jenya has faced ever since they gained independence. In 2008, Mwai Kibaki made a proposal to Odinga, offering to share his political power with him. Odinga agreed and this helped climate the ongoing crisis.

However, Raila Amolo Odinga remained in alliance with Mwai Kibaki in the hope that he will be the political candidate to succeed Mwai Kibaki. Unfortunately, when the 2012 presidential election came, Mwai Kibaki chose Uhuru Kenyatta to be his successor. He defended his decision, stating that he strongly believes that Kenya’s politics should be handed over to the younger generation. On the other hand, Raila Amolo Odinga and his supporters argued that Uhuru is an inexperienced politician who also lacks what it takes to be a leader. Raila Amolo Odinga went ahead to defect from Mwai Kibaki’s party. In the end, the election was majorly between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Amolo Odinga. Sadly for Odinga, he lost to Uhuru Kenyatta and accepted defeat.

The 2017 presidential election which took place in August, also saw the same top contestants, Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Amolo Odinga. According to the election result, Uhuru won by having 54 percent of the total votes, while Odinga was announced to have 43 percent of the total votes. Odinga refused to agree with the election result, he stated that the election was not a fair election and can not be accepted.
