Popularly referred to by his stage name, Micheal Owusu Addo is a Ghanaian Hip-hop recording artist who was born to his mother Maame Agrey in Tema, Ghana. Sarkodie is the fourth child in a family of five children. He attended Tema Methodist Senior High School after which he moved on to bag a degree in graphic design from IPMC.

Sarkodie started rapping at a very young age and he began his musical career as an underground rapper. He once participated in Adom FM’s famous rap competition, Kasahare Level. He met his former manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment while he was going here and there for rap battles. Through coincidence, he also came across Edem and Castro who are also musicians like him. Edem and Castro were the ones who introduced Sarkodie to a renowned record producer called Hammer of The Last Two. After being introduced to Sarkodie, Hammer of The Last Two made a decision to feature him on two songs off his Volta Regime album because he was really impressed with the flow of his rap and bars. After participating and battling different rappers on the popular radio rap competition, Kasahare Level, he was signed as a record label mate into JM Entertainment.
Sarkodie recorded his first single “Baby” in which he featured Mugeez of the R2Bees duo and the single became an instant hit song making him become a household name in the Ghanaian Music Industry. In 2011, Sarkodie released several other singles such as Good Bye, One Time For Your Mind, You Go Kill Me, and Living Legend all of which were well-received throughout the Republic of Ghana. Then, in 2012, he held the album launch party for his second studio album, Rapperholic, an album which also received positive reviews from music critics and fans. The album featured so many guest artists like Efya, Chidynma, R2Bees, Obrafour, Jayso, EL and so many others. After it’s launch, he embarked on a nationwide tour to give the album more recognition. The Rapperholic album earned Sarkodie his first BET nomination and award. He was also featured on the BET Hip Hop Awards cypher together with Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, and Ab-Soul, being the only African artiste to be featured on the cypher.
In October 2013, Sarkodie released a remix of his 2011 hit single, You Go Kill Me. The remix featured hotshot artistes like Wizkid, Ice Prince, Navio and EL. On December 21, 2013, a concert was organized to launch his third studio album, Sarkology. The launch party was held at the Accra Sports Stadium and many A-list artists like Davido, Fuse ODG, AKA, Tiwa Savage, Banky W, 2 Face Idibia, Joey B and Efya were featured on the album. The album was subsequently released on January 2, 2014. After the release of the album, he released the official remix for his single “Adonai”, a remix which became a viral hit across Africa immediately. The remix was even featured in BBC’s Capital Xtra Top 35 Afrobeats songs. In 2014, Sarkodie launched his own record label, Sarkcess Music and he released singles such as Megye Wo Girl, Love Rocks, Chingum and Whine For Me under the record label. He also released the music videos for Adonai and Special Someone under the label. In 2014, Sarkodie was featured in collaboration with other artists such as Lola Rae, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Mi Casa, and Diamond Platinumz on a song for DSTV’s Africa Rising Campaign, which was started to encourage Africans to participate in community-based social investment projects.
On September 12, 2015, Sarkodie released his fourth studio album, Mary. The album was named after his grandmother Mary who died in 2012. The autograph session of the album was held at the West Hills Mall, the biggest mall in West Africa. About 4,000 copies of the Mary album was sold on the first day of its release and the lead single off the album was a song titled “Mewu”. On February 27, 2016, he delivered a speech about “The Art of Hustle” to a group of Harvard Business School Students, a speech which was basically about his success and the difficulties he faces as an African musician. His fifth studio album, Highest, was released on September 8, 2017. The album included 19 songs, 3 interludes and a bonus track. Highest featured artists such as Jesse Jagz, Flavour, Korede Bello, Moelogo, Big Narstie and Victoria Kimani. The album was mainly produced by music producer, Jayso with supplementary production from MasterKraft, TSpize, Ced Solo, Nova and Guilty Beatz.
